A New Programme at Loughborough University:
Chemistry with Materials

Chemical materials are all around us: in our cars (polymers, alloys), in the buildings we live in (cements, metals) and in the clothes we wear (polymers, pigments). Other more hidden uses of chemical materials include, medicine (bio-materials, magnetic resonance imaging machines) or technology (laser discs, magnetic energy storage). Synthetic and natural chemical materials can be seen in structural, bio-supportive, responsive and cosmetic situations everywhere.

for complete details about study in abroad, visit study in abroad corner

Materials is one area of research which brings together all the physical sciences: chemists to synthesise and characterise the solids, physicists to investigate their properties and engineers to fabricate them into useful devices.

Since the last decade, the chemistry of materials has become an essential part of a chemistry degree, as the relationship between chemical structure and inherent physical properties has been recognised.

Why Study Chemistry with Materials
Chemists are not just found at the bench in pharmaceutical companies, they also work in chemical plants, for the utility companies such as gas and electricity and even on oil rigs. Other roles include using chemistry to branch out into other areas such as geochemistry, astrochemistry and marine chemistry. These careers, and many others like them, do not just require chemical knowledge of the materials they use, but also how these materials are fabricated and even recycled.

For this reason, the Chemistry Department at Loughborough University has recently joined with the University’s Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering to create an undergraduate degree programme which trains chemists for the more physical science end of chemistry. This new undergraduate programme, called Chemistry with Materials to reflect its content, is based on years of teaching and research experience and offers new opportunities.

Why Study Chemistry with Materials at Loughborough
The Chemistry with Materials Programme at Loughborough University takes advantage of expertise in both the Chemistry and the Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering Departments to teach a course which deals, not only in the synthesis of materials, but also their characterisation and fabrication. The full history of a material from chemical composition, to the working material and its recycling is examined in a fully integrated course. A major component of this programme is based on polymer chemistry where there are many experts in the field in both the chemistry and materials based departments.

Our students benefit from the excellent facilities available for the teaching of both theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry.

Since chemistry is a practical science, you will spend a significant amount of your time (about 50%) in the laboratory developing the skills required by a chemistry graduate – you will be reassured to know that our laboratories are equipped to the highest standards.

The academic staff responsible for teaching on the Chemistry with Materials programme are nationally and internationally recognised as experts in their chosen fields. The research they undertake is ‘cutting edge’ science and much of the research work is supported by Chemical Industry. This provides for a dynamic and stimulating environment for teaching and learning to take place effectively.

The Chemistry Department prides itself on the approachability of our staff and the pastoral care provided by the personal tutoring system operated within the Department. On arrival you will be assigned a personal tutor with whom you are encouraged to talk about your progress on the programme and who is always on hand to help with any difficulties or problems that may arise.

Typical Student Profile

* Anyone with a good background in the physical sciences

* Anyone with a interest in how materials e.g. polymers, semiconductors and superconductors, electronic materials, alloys, cements and building materials move from the laboratory bench into our everyday lives

* Anyone with an interest in how and why a material is chosen for a particular application

Major Topics Studied
* Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry

* Analytical Chemistry including Characterisation Techniques such as Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

* Synthesis, Characterization, Use and Recycling of Polymers

* Materials Design and Use

If you want your written work to be successful, you need to follow a certain list of things. This includes having:

-a certain degree of professionalism

-information on the topic being written about

-hard work and determination, and

-an excellent writing ability

Report writing generally comes in three types, however whichever style you adopt, all will require in depth analysis, research and investigations to be done by you before these reports can be produced in a written format.

Report writing is not a difficult task however many of you students tend to be unable to proceed with it. The main reason for this is that you are to get a grade for your hard work. In order to get an idea on how to write a report, you can follow the following tips.

Write in an articulate manner

Make sure that the report you are writing makes sense.

That is the first aspect which you should keep in mind when writing a report. Include information in your report which makes sense and which is relevant to your topic. Only go into detail in those aspects which you think the reader might find hard to understand.

Write in your own style

Since you are required to do research in order to produce your report, many of you tend to use words and sentences directly off the internet. Do not do that at any cost. You need to write a report which is original and which coveys your ideas and opinions.

Provide examples

Readers always like to have examples for them to understand a certain concept better. Not only will your reader understand what you are trying to explain, you will also be able to prove your claim with evidence. No matter what your report is about, give examples to support your views.

Provide citations

If you have used information from a certain website or a book, make sure you mention this at the end of the report. This is always an added advantage

Report writing is a task which many of you must have gotten when you were in school and still get them by your teachers despite being in college and/or university. It is often difficult for student to write a detailed report which you as well as your professors like. In order relieve you from this problem, you can make use of our website and avail written reports which have been written especially for students like you! We offer reports for a variety of topics and assist you with your work whenever required and all work is plagiarism free written by our expert writers.

Character education is a term which is often heard and everyone claims to know what this term means. But in actual terms there are not so many people who have a clear understanding of this very important phrase. To comprehend this term, let’s begin with the term character. What is character? A character is the reflection of ones personality. Your traits, your habits, what you do, what you say, the way you walk, talk, eat, deal with people all comprises your character and personality.

Character education is, as defined by Lickona, “the deliberate, proactive effort to develop good character in kids—or, more simply, to teach children right from wrong. It assumes that right and wrong do exist, that there are objective moral standards that transcend individual choice—standards like respect, responsibility, honesty, and fairness—and that we should teach these directly to young people.”

In simpler words, character education means teaching good moral values, giving a concept of right and wrong, good and evil.

Providing character education to kids includes all kind of your interaction with them, it’s in the way you talk to them, the behaviors you exhibit, the actions you encourage etc. In your every kind of dealing with the kids, no matter who you are, you are always contributing towards building their characters.

A common perception is that a child starts the education when he/she goes to school. But it is not correct. In fact the education begins from home. They are the parents and the family that contribute the most towards building up the child’s character.

All parents want their children to posses an excellent character, with all positive traits in them. This is not an easy task. It imposes a lot of responsibility on the part of the parents. It’s their duty to filter their child’s activities so that it leads to his positive character building. Here comes a conflict of opinion. Some parents tend to adopt the system of rewards and penalties to bring their children to the correct path. But this act is not so effective because the kids should themselves be able to discriminate between right and wrong so that in the long run, even under pressurized circumstances, they should be able to take fair decisions on their own.

After the parents and family, next two most influential factors are teachers and school environment. The school authorities are responsible to include direct teaching of character education under school curriculum. Students visualize their teachers as role models. Therefore the teachers can play a very significant role in the character building of their students. Teaching emerges from one’s inwardness, for better or worse like any truly human activity. Being a good teacher does not only mean to have a complete grasp over your subject but it also demands be morally fair too in your dealings and talks. In a more formal way, one can say that good teaching comes from good people. Education does not only include teaching the curriculum and the technical stuff. But it also means to deliver good moral values to their students and if delivered in a correct way, this leads to the positive character building of the student. There should be regular seminars, conferences and character education programs conducted for the teachers by the school authorities, telling them how to indulge into positive character education of the students and also enlightening them with the fact that they hold very imperative position in the character building of their students. This will develop a sense of responsibility in teachers and they will feel themselves liable for the character building of their students. Effective character education is not which is only practiced by teachers but also it must be modeled by all other adults in the school with whom the student interacts like faculty, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, maintenance staff etc.

For providing proper character education it is very important to know the basic building blocks of a good character. Some of the attributes which are of foremost importance in building a good character are justice, self discipline and control, gratitude, wisdom, integrity, humanity, fortitude, hard work, love and positive attitude.

Media and books are also very important means of character education. Reading stories with a good moral generally inspires children, young boys and girls. Watching TV programs that deliver a lesson can also be very helpful in this regard.

Character educating no doubt holds the same importance in life as the normal technical education. Therefore this part should not be ignored and one should contribute to the maximum in positive character building of the people for whom he/she is liable for.

Every webmaster–even those who have been writing for the web for awhile–can benefit from a good writing tip. The following 10 tips are guaranteed to improve your copy and make writing for the web easier. Although most of the tips are geared toward the average webmaster, they can be implemented by anyone who is writing for the web.

Webmaster Writing Tip #1: Write What You Know

Although every webmaster has already heard this writing tip, it is worth mentioning. Writing what you know is always the best policy when writing for the web. There’s a lot of bad info online already–no sense in adding more.

Webmaster Writing Tip #2: Research What You Write

Since writing what you know isn’t always practical when you’re writing for the web, you should at least research what you write. This will help you turn fuzzy knowledge into viable facts.

Webmaster Writing Tip #3: Use Correct Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

Using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation is really important when you’re writing for the web. When in doubt, look it up.

Webmaster Writing Tip #4: Try to Answer Questions

Writing for the web is a lot like writing for a newspaper. You need to answer all of the essential questions that a user might have. Think who, what, when, where, and why.

Webmaster Writing Tip #5: Pick a Keyword

When you’re writing for the web, you should pick at least one keyword or key phrase to stick with from the beginning of the article to the end. This tells search engines and human readers what your article is about.

Webmaster Writing Tip #6: Use Lots of White Space

Writing for the web is not like writing a book or a column. You should have lots of white space in between text. It makes your article appear cleaner and more appealing to readers who like to scan information.

Webmaster Writing Tip #7: Keep It Short

When it comes to writing for the web, shorter is better. Internet users have limited time and short attention spans–they don’t want to sift through lengthy text. The ideal word count for a web article is between 250 and 500 words.

Webmaster Writing Tip #8: Choose a Good Title

A good title is important when you’re writing for the web. Titles tell readers and search engines what articles are about. The best titles pique curiosity or give readers something they want.

Webmaster Writing Tip #9: Edit What You Write

It is easy to fall in love with what you have written, but you need to learn how to cut the fluff. This is especially true when you are writing for the web. As stated earlier, Internet users have limited time and short attention spans. In other words, they have no patience for a chatty webmaster.

Webmaster Writing Tip #10: Proofread What You Write

Writing for the web is no different than writing for any other media. You must proofread what you write. If you forget every writing tip you heard today, remember that one. It is probably the best writing tip you will ever get.
