 In fact home education was rather popular form of education in past times till public schools began to develop fast.  Such situation continued till 1980-ies, when the popularity of home education began to come back. Since that time some families continued to teach their children at home. Maybe home education is not so difficult, but entrance the college or university has always been difficult.
Earlier acceptance of home educated children was rather unusual, but today universities and colleges want to accept home educated students.
