Bringing toys in is a simple but often forgotten task that can impact the way potential intruders view the home. Once your children are old enough to be left alone, decide, together, on a set of rules for staying safe while the parents are out. If they do answer phone calls, make sure that, unless speaking to a close friend or family member, they always say that mom and dad are “busy,” or “in the shower,” instead of out on errands. Finally, make sure children are careful with private information. Private information includes telephone numbers, addresses, and even last names. It may also include travel plans. Whether at school, the park, the mall, the gym, the pool-wherever-make sure they take a “you never know who’s listening approach” to ensure that nobody can pin down times that the family or parents will be away.
